The USGS files of topographic map names are difficult to use, requiring either dBase or ArcView. These Excel files take the map names and 'plot' them in a grid that puts them in their proper relative geographic positions. It is a simple macro to then take any USGS map image file and insert the name in the filename.

Each of these files has an approximate state line graphic in the background and are colored to designate which maps are included in which state archive.

Description
File
1:24K (7.5 minute quads) map names in Excel -- 852 kb. This table is 180 cells wide by 140 cells tall, which makes it difficult to grasp if you open it at 100% and anywhere in the middle. Recommend you open it at 25% and in the upper left corner to get an idea how to use it. Three are some annotations on this copy that list the size of some of the special collections of Quads in my archives--coastal areas and national parks, mostly. There are graphic lines overlaid on the table to depict approximate boundaries. These lines are essential in keeping you oriented to your approximately location relative to the state lines, as you move across the table. Some Excel viewers do not show these addtional graphics. File size is 851 kb.
Same as above but with color fill removed. File size is inexplicably 975 kb.
1:100K (30x60 minutes) map names in Excel -- 77 kb
1:250K (1x2 degrees) map names in Excel -- 45 kb
